They both loved her, definitely but James, while she was a good influence on him, never quite needed her the way Severus did.
They other Houses don’t really associate with them, Friendships with those of other Houses are rare and usually short lived, and any attempts to make any kind of contact is met with suspicion and mistrust. New students, more often than not, if they weren’t already in the know, are told immediately that the Slytherin House is full of Evil, Dark wizards and bullies. People who really should have been in Slytherin beg to be put in one of the ‘Good’ Houses while those who don’t are there by punished for obviously being a bad person.
And when every other House treats you like you’ve murdered someone (or plan to), why would you want to be nice to them? Why would you want to try and be friends with people who hate you? Why waste your time trying to win the affection and companionship of people who never tried to do the same for you? No, It’s better to keep to your own House, they’re the only ones you can trust, the only ones who know what being a Slytherin is like.
Why should Slytherins bother with House Unity when no one really cares about them?
Lily had been trying for years to get Severus away from the Dark Arts and the idea of Blood Purity. She spent hours talking to him about it and though he said he listened and that he would try harder, he never did change.
Him calling her a Mudblood was the last straw and a slap in the face more than anything else. She had actually contemplated Severus in that way before, in the way childhood friends can sometimes do. Now, in her eyes, it was the proof she had been trying to ignore - that he cared more about power and dark magic than he ever did about her.
It was Severus’s worst memory because, deep down, he knew if he had listened to her, she’d have eventually fallen in love with him the way he loved her.
And it’s one of the most awkward things ever.
Lily, of course, is happy as is Remus since he’s always hated the fighting. Sirius tries to be the tough guy who knows he owes Severus an apology and gives it in the most reluctant way possible.
But James is just so thankful to Severus for protecting Harry, even if it wasn’t for him - Hell, even if it wasn’t for Harry! - because he did it anyway, after all the crap he put him through when they were kids.
