It took a long time for Regulus to finish the whole potion, hours upon hours, but he refused to hurt Kreacher by making him an accomplice in his self induced torture.  He couldn’t help that Kreacher had to be there at all but he had hoped, however futile, to make it as less traumatizing as possible. Hermione was the only one to catch on that Kreacher, when he told them the story, that at no point does he mention forcing Regulus to drink the potion.
